Hallicrafters S-38 Receiver

S-38 Receiver

The model shown here was the first of the Hallicrafters S-38 line, which continued from 1946 through 1949.  This was Hallicrafters' entry level receiver and sold for $39.50 in 1947.  It introduced many thousands of people to shortwave and CW listening.  It is compact in size, weighing in at 11 pounds and is 12 7/8 inches wide by 6 7/8 inches high by 7 7/8 inches deep.   It incorporates many of the features found in its more expensive brothers.  It has four tuning bands ranging from .54 Mhz to 32 Mhz, CW pitch control adjustable from the front panel, A.N.L. and a self-contained PM dynamic speaker.  This is the only model of the series that has 6 tubes, noise blanker and a CW pitch control.  These features were taken off all the later models as a cost-control measure.

The Hallicrafters S-38 receiver is housed in a steel cabinet with a rich satin black finish.  The speaker grill in the top is made of airodized steel.  The chassis is cadmium plated.  Lettering is in gray and the switch knobs are  red.

This receiver is in very nice original condition.  The paint and knobs are original, and it has the original back cover (often missing since it is made of cardboard).  It also has the original Hallicrafters paper label on the bottom of  the radio.
